Hi,
I own the program Chat Watch 5 and would like to know whether an upgrade can be made in the programme so that the executable file is not seen in the windows task manager.

Hi Sandra,
Unfortunately, no, there isn't a way for a program to remove itself from that list. You could, however, rename the cww.exe and file to a different file name to possibly make it less suspicous looking. You can rename the cww.exe file to anything you want so you can be as creative as you want (as long as it still ends with .exe).
If you have the "Start logging chats when Windows starts" option in Chat Watch's settings selected, you'll need to tell Windows the new name of the cww.exe file. To do this, log on to your computer as an Administrator user, and:
1. Click Start, Run, enter regedit.exe in the box and click Ok.
2. In the treeview on the left, find this location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
3. In the list on the right, look for the cww entry and double-click it. The value for it will be similar to "C:\Program Files\cw5\cww.exe". (The path may be different if you installed Chat Watch to a different folder.)
4. Change the cww.exe part of that path to be the same as the new file name and click Ok.
We generally don't recommend renaming the cww.exe file (because of the extra steps listed above) but in some instances it may be necessary.

Another question:
I can not install the program elsewhere, only in C / Program Files.
Even if I select another folder in time to install the files, it will automatically install the C: / the computer.
What to do?

You can choose a different folder by running the Chat Watch setup with the /DIR option:
C:\cw_setup.exe /DIR="C:\PathTo\Install\ChatWatch"
This will instruct Chat Watch's installation to install to the folder you specify instead of the default folder.

I share Sandra's concern about CW being too easy for kids to see. It needs to take more steps to hide itself. Couldn't it be made to run as a Windows service so that it would run with the SYSTEM username and be less obvious in Task Manager?
CW functionality looks good but it needs to protect itself better from kids who may detect it and try to interfere with it.

A service is a good idea. The reason why we did not make it as a service is because a service can sometimes cause extra configuration steps and that administrator users (a lot of times "administrators" includes the kids) of the computer can easily stop, or worse, disable a service. We tested Chat Watch 4 as a service (using Microsoft's INSTRV.EXE and SRVANY.EXE programs) with medium success. We have not yet tested it with Chat Watch 5 but we will do so and let you know how it goes.
